Community Service

Community

While ample opportunities are offered to play, explore and have fun, The Deens Academy also strives to foster a sense of social responsibility in its students by encouraging them to view world problems in terms how they can contribute. We do this by involving our students in a series of community service projects – this sparks off a willingness in children to reach out and help others and think about the big picture. The goal of getting students to participate in outreach activities is to help them make the connection ‘from me to the world’ and see themselves as an intrinsic part of their community. Ultimately, our goal is to help our students be knowledgeable, responsible, socially skilled, healthy, caring, and contributing citizens of the world.

Community outreach programs

Environment

Environmental consciousness is integral to our enrichment agenda. The focus of this programme is to help children realise how their immediate choices and behaviours impact the future of the planet.  We educate our students about ecology and empower them with ecologically intelligent values like sustainable living and responsible consumption. We encourage a hands-on involvement with environmental issues. We do this through interactions with experts in the field, attendance at events and symposia, encouraging writing about contemporary problems, putting up street plays and participating in public dialogue. Through these many avenues students begin to understand the importance of caring for the environment and feel responsible towards its upkeep. Several of our students are currently spearheading projects on water conservation, pollution reduction and other environmental concerns. The Saahas e-waste drive is one program the children participated in.

Handful of  joy program.

During their survey, students felt that they need to improve the health/ well being of our support staff.  An initiative called “Hand full of joy” where the children and teachers of different classes will contribute some nutritious food on the first of every month, based on a pre- drawn timetable. The food items includes, fruits, nuts, Ragi malt, Horlicks, dates raisins and biscuits which are rationed out to them in regular intervals.

The Joy of Giving month: October

Deens Academy  celebrates the ‘Daan Utsav  (The Joy of Giving Week), a festival of philanthropy by engaging our students and teachers through acts of  ‘giving’.  As part of this, we are  participating in the following activities.

Wish Tree

During the Joy Of Giving month, A wish tree will be displayed at the school in admin foyer, with a variety of wishes displayed. Example: I promise 10 note books @ Rs 200, I promise 2 school bags @ Rs 200. etc. Any visitor, parent, teacher willing to fulfill the wish may pickup the card put up on the tree and make the donation in the collection box kept in the library. In return you would get a card that says “I DID MY BIT”.

Donation of books to orphanage Sishu Mandir.

This unique program was an enriching experience for our students who experienced first hand the joy of giving. The unrestrained love, care and empathy that our own children displayed, with their hugs, smiles and selfless sharing were endearing moments which we will cherish forever.

The children of Bal Utsav visited us again for their sports day. A detailed report on this activity is in our Deens Diary.
